Mahler 6 tonight, with Simone Young subbing for JvZ. A brisk, full-bodied reading, tight and clear. Enough bend when needed, but never wallowing in the softer bits. Every (very extended) section was in excellent form, notably the horns. (Yes, the horns!) It’s a big, big play for everyone, and there’s not a lot of time to recharge before the next hairy bit comes along. If I wanted for anything, it was a bit more dynamic range: more varieties of loud, perhaps. And maybe a bit less prominent spot for the cowbells.
