There's a lot in the Met's new Falstaff that seems to have been born of "Hey, this will look cool" and not too much else. The piece isn't high on my list of preferred Verdi; maybe I just don't get it, but this production didn't help it any.
A bit of shoddy ensemble in the Act I quartets and the start of the pokey fairy chorus, but otherwise musically quite fine. It's Falstaff Ambrogio Maestri's show through and through, and he shoulders it admirably. I give it a good solid "shmeh"...it won't kill you if you catch it when it's on TV (and I suspect it looks way better that way), but except maybe Maestri there's nothing really unmissable about it.
